Cannes 2012 : “Dead Before Dawn” film review
May 20th… On a rainy day in Cannes – and this does not happen very often – the only way to escape the bad weather was to hide in a theatre. And the wangolicious and much-awaited “Dead Before Dawn” movie was just the right thing to watch. Lucky me !
But how to write about it without giving away any spoiler ? Maybe by telling a little bit more about the characters…
The perfect anti-hero. A total loser at school and at home. He’s desperately in love with Charlotte and they are both the reason why everything happens. “I don’t cry, I sweat in the eyes”. All is said.
MARTHA MACISAAC as CHARLOTTE BAKER
She’s the smart girl, but hangs out with a bunch of weirdos…
KYLE SCHMID as PATRICK BISHOP
Mr Patty Wagon, cute and charming, he forgot where he left his brains. Full of muscles, he does not know how to use them. But his character is freaking funny, you gotta love him !
BRANDON JAY MC LAREN as DAZZLE DARLINGTON
A good guy, courageous and ready to help. He likes to smash Zemons but… Oops, he’s just not careful enough.
BRITTANY ALLEN as LUCY WINTHROP
The perfect stupid blonde cheerleader. But her character becomes definitely hilarious in the second part of the movie.
TIM DOIRON as SETH MUNDAY
He’s a whirlwind of craziness, as always. He loves Lucy, ninjas and mugs. What if his strange obsessions could help breaking the curse ?
APRIL MULLEN as BECKY FORDS
She’s Casper’s best friend. The Gothic girl with a First World Problem : lipstick. She’s a little bit like “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”, but with dark hair.
CHRISTOPHER LLOYD as HORUS GALLOWAY
Owner of the Occult Shop, he always follows his three rules. He is just the perfect man for that role and it reminded me good old times from the “Back to the Future” saga. Can I have him as my third Grandpa ?
ELLEN DUBIN as BEVERLY GALLOWAY
She’s probably the actress you didn’t not expect here. She’s like Mother Hen to her son (Casper) and has serious problems with meatballs, toasters and toilet brushes.
A big shout out to the cast (who delivers awesome funny performances), the crew (who did a great job with make-up effects) and all the extras from the football scene (you were all brilliant Zemons) !
For those you already saw their others movies, you’ll definitely recognize April and Tim’s very own “Wango style” in the first minutes of the movie. There are so many details in each scene – and be aware that every single detail counts – that you’ll probably have to watch the movie a couple of times to get everything !
Don’t worry about the 3D thing, you won’t get out of the theatre with a headache and won’t see unidentified objects flying in the theatre, it just gives you another perspective and that’s really cool. I don’t know how it looks like in 2D, but 3D is definitely worth it.
So the question is : will the Gang be able to reverse the curse before dawn ? That’s a mystery….
In the meantime, you’ll have to be a little bit more patient until you’ll be able to watch it, but here is a 50 seconds teaser coming very soon… You will love it.
