OFFICIAL PAGE FOR APRIL MULLEN & TIM DOIRON'S MOVIE WORLD

Mullen flick to open in Niagara Friday

After a head start in the U.S., Niagara filmmaker April Mullen will finally bring her latest movie home next week.

88, a thriller filmed in and around Niagara Falls two years ago, will have a one-week run at Landmark Cinemas in St. Catharines starting May 8. On May 9, director Mullen, writer Tim Doiron and star Katharine Isabelle will attend a red carpet event prior to the 6:50 p.m. screening. The night will include prizes and live music.

Mullen has held a special Niagara screening for her three previous movies, and is anxious to bring her latest back. “It’s much different,” she says. “88 is a much bigger film for us. It’s also a thriller, not a comedy, so it’s exciting to show that side of us.”

Mullen and moviemaking partner Tim Doiron have produced a trio of Canadian-made comedies: The Way of the Tosser, GravyTrain and the 3-D romp Dead Before Dawn.

But with 88, she went much darker. With a script written by Doiron, the film stars Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, American Mary) as a woman in a fugue state seeking payback for the death of her boyfriend. Christopher Lloyd co-stars, playing a villain for one of the few times in his career.

All of Mullen‘s movies are mainly filmed in Niagara Falls, with family and friends often making appearances. 88 was no different, with her dad Mike playing a large role. Key sequences were filmed at the Cristal Club on Lundy’s Lane.

The film’s U.S. rights were picked up by Millennium Entertainment. It debuted in the U.S. Jan. 6 on DVD, Blu-ray and Video-On-Demand. It will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in Canada June 9.

If anything, the early release in the U.S. has helped the film generate buzz in Canada, says Mullen.

88 has sold in 22 territories already. The reviews have been very positive, so any kind of buzz online really helps. When you Google it or see the trailers, there’s already so much out there that’s positive about it.”

Mullen‘s next film will be the horror flick Farhope Tower.
