‘Farhope Tower’ at the Niagara Integrated Film Festival

The upcoming Niagara Integrated Film Festival will bring the return of Niagara Falls filmmaker April Mullen.

The prolific director takes part in the festival’s Industry Day June 17 at Johnny Rocco’s on Merritt Street in St. Catharines, discussing the movie biz with other professionals. She also brings her recent supernatural horror flick Farhope Tower for a festival screening at the Seneca Queen Theatre June 10 in Niagara Falls.

“I am really stoked about getting her on board,” said festival manager Robert Lalonde. “Although this year’s event features Canadian and world premieres, it’s always exciting to celebrate home-grown talent such as April Mullen.”

Farhope Tower had its world premiere last year at London, England’s Fright Fest, where it won two awards. It’s a stark departure for Mullen, who had previously directed comedies like GravyTrain and Dead Before Dawn, and the gritty drama 88.

Mullen is in post-production on another drama, the lesbian-themed Below Her Mouth. It was was made with an all-female cast and crew.

Farhope Tower, which Mullen also stars in alongside longtime filmmaking partner Tim Doiron, follows the crew of a ‘ghost hunting’ TV show shooting the pilot for a new series inside an abandoned high-rise known for its unexplained suicides.

“I love challenging myself and exploring new genres,” said Mullen from France, where she’s at the Cannes Film Festival. “Each genre brings with it a very different side of my personality. I completely immerse myself in the film no matter the genre and push a drastic learning curse when it comes to creating.

A week after the Falls screening, Mullen will be among the guests for the festival’s Industry Day, discussing Niagara as the new ‘media hub’ of southern Ontario. She’ll be joined by moderator / film producer Patrick Gagliardi, FourGrounds Media, Inc. president Adrian Thiesson, Generator at One manager Steve Boese and Royal Bank senior relationship manager Michael Meredith. The panel runs from noon to 1 p.m. The entire day will have speakers and presentations from 9:30 to 4 p.m.

“You’ll get to network and listen to people who’ve made it on different levels,” said Lalonde.

Sharing with young filmmakers is always refreshing,” said Mullen. “It brings me back to my run and gun days. Reminding young people how important it is to work hard, stay focussed and follow your dreams is something I take seriously.”

Mullen has brought every film she’s made back to Niagara for a gala screening. It’s a feeling she never tires of.

“I’m a hometown girl at heart. Wherever my family and support system are, I love to be and share the experience with them. “There’s nothing better than shooting in Niagara Falls and the region… super secret locations I adore and being home inspires me.”

This year’s film festival will be a family affair for the moviemaking Mullen clan: April’s sister Melanie will also be screening two films in the festival’s local component, Niagara Rises Shorts – Stalker Break-Up and Searching For Silence. Ten films will be screened July 11 at the Seneca Queen Theatre.

The third annual Niagara Integrated Film Festival runs June 10 to 19.
